What is a TMS (Theatre Management System)?

How a multiplex manages content, shows, lighting and masking for every hall from a single screen.

Updated: 24 October 2026 · AHA DCS Entertainment Experts

Short answer

A TMS (Theatre Management System) is software that manages the servers and projectors of every hall in a cinema from one place. It distributes films and ads, tracks KDMs, builds playlists from the show schedule coming from the ticketing system, and triggers auditorium automation such as lights, curtains and masking. The result is fewer errors and an operation that runs with fewer staff.

What does a TMS do?

  • Content distribution: sends films, trailers and ads from a central library to the right hall servers.
  • KDM management: distributes keys to the right devices and warns about those close to expiry.
  • Playlists and shows: builds each show's playlist from the schedule coming from the ticketing (POS) system.
  • Auditorium automation: changes lights, curtains, masking and sound level based on cues in the playlist.
  • Monitoring and reporting: brings device status, errors and playback logs onto one screen.

Who needs one?

A single-screen cinema can work from the server interface. As the number of halls grows, ingesting content one by one and matching KDMs and playlists by hand creates errors and staff load; that is when a TMS becomes essential. Chains with several sites use a TMS together with central monitoring.

Integration points

ConnectionWhy it matters

What to look for in a TMS

  1. Compatibility with your server and projector brands
  2. Integration with your ticketing system
  3. Multi-site and remote-access support
  4. Alerting and reporting features
  5. Local support, training and update policy

Frequently asked questions

What does TMS stand for?
Theatre Management System: software that manages content, KDMs, playlists and automation for every hall in a cinema from one place.
Is a TMS the same as a ticketing system?
No. The ticketing (POS) system handles sales and the show schedule; the TMS takes that schedule and runs playback and automation in the halls. Integrating the two is recommended.
From how many halls is a TMS needed?
There is no fixed number; the more halls, the higher the risk of managing content and KDMs by hand. In multiplexes a TMS has become standard.
Can a TMS be monitored remotely?
Yes. With the right network and security setup, hall status can be monitored centrally and many issues resolved remotely.
